Aberdeen to St Andrews by Train and Bus

By St Andrews Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

From Aberdeen there is one change, and it is a simple one. ScotRail, LNER and CrossCountry trains from Aberdeen reach Leuchars in about 1h25 with four stops, and the 77 or 99 bus, run by Moffat & Williamson and Stagecoach, takes 12 minutes and 14 stops from Leuchars into St Andrews. The typical wait for the bus is about nine minutes, which makes the whole journey roughly an hour and three-quarters, or about 12 minutes less on the best connections.

Timetable

Connections left Aberdeen about hourly on the weekday we checked, from 05:57 to 21:06, though not evenly. There were 16 in all, six of them between 05:57 and 09:52. The 05:57 reaches St Andrews at about 07:45 and the 21:06 at about ten to eleven at night. The longest gap was over two hours, between the 16:04 and the 18:18, which is worth planning around if you are leaving Aberdeen after work. Slower connections leaving at 16:32, 17:14 and 17:45 fall inside that gap, taking from about 2h10 to 2h40.

Driving barely changes the picture: the road route is 78 miles via the A90 and takes about 1h40, within a few minutes of the train and bus.

Slower alternatives

You can also take the train to Dundee and a bus from there, which took a little over two hours, or go via Cupar, which took about 2h05 to 2h20. Both are slower than changing at Leuchars and are only worth it when no Leuchars connection fits your day.

Arriving

Once off the bus, Market Street is a seven-minute walk of about 500 metres, so getting from the Aberdeen train at Leuchars to the middle of town takes a little under half an hour.
