From Glasgow the trip takes two trains and a bus. ScotRail and Lumo run from Glasgow Queen Street to Haymarket in about 45 minutes, and you change there for a train to Leuchars, about an hour more with two stops. The 77 or 99 bus then covers the 12 minutes from Leuchars to St Andrews. The typical journey takes about 2h15, with just under 20 minutes of waiting across the two changes, and the best connections bring it to just under two hours.
On the weekday we checked, connecting departures from Queen Street ran every 30 to 60 minutes or so from 06:17 to 22:15, half-hourly through most of the morning. In all, 24 of them connected through to St Andrews. The 06:48 reaches St Andrews at about 09:05, and the 21:15 at about half past eleven at night. The weak spot is late morning: on this pattern the 10:45 was followed by the 12:15. Other Leuchars connections leaving Glasgow at 11:02 and 11:41 cover that gap; the 11:41 took about 2h05, the 11:02 nearer 2h30.
The last departure, the 22:15 from Glasgow, reaches St Andrews at about half past midnight. Otherwise, the regular Queen Street pattern via Haymarket is the easiest to remember, so it is the one to plan around.
The drive is 73 miles via the A91 and takes about 1h40, roughly half an hour less than the typical rail and bus journey from Queen Street.
Market Street is about seven minutes’ walk, roughly 500 metres, from the end of the bus ride in St Andrews, so add that to the 2h15 when working out when you will reach the centre.
